Patience

Patience is not sitting and waiting, it is foreseeing.
It is looking at the thorn and seeing the rose.

Sheb-i-Arus [Wedding Night]

MAWLANA JALAL AL-DIN AL-RUMI passed away on Dec 17, 1273. This date is known as Sheb-i Arus (Wedding Night). Every year the 17th of December is celebrated as the night of Rumi's reunion with his Beloved.

When I die
when my coffin
is being taken out
you must never think
i am missing this world

don’t shed any tears
don’t lament or
feel sorry
i’m not falling
into a monster’s abyss

when you see
my corpse is being carried
don’t cry for my leaving
i’m not leaving
i’m arriving at eternal love

when you leave me
in the grave
don’t say goodbye
remember a grave is
only a curtain
for the paradise behind

you’ll only see me
descending into a grave
now watch me rise
how can there be an end
when the sun sets or
the moon goes down

it looks like the end
it seems like a sunset
but in reality it is a dawn
when the grave locks you up
that is when your soul is freed

have you ever seen
a seed fallen to earth
not rise with a new life
why should you doubt the rise
of a seed named human

have you ever seen
a bucket lowered into a well
coming back empty
why lament for a soul
when it can come back
like Joseph from the well

when for the last time
you close your mouth
your words and soul
will belong to the world of
no place no time.

Dil e Nadan

Dil e Nadan tujhe hua kya hai
Akhir is dard ke dawa kya hai

Hum hain mushtaq aur wo bayzar
Ya Ilahi ye majra kya hai

Mai bhi muh mai zuban rakhta hun
Kaash pocho ke muda’a kya hai

Jab ke tujh bin nahe koi maujood
Phir ye hangama ay Khuda kya hai

Sabza-o-gul kahan se aye hain
Abar kya cheez hai, hawa kya hai

Hum ko unse wafa ke hai umeed
Jo nahe jantay wafa kya hai

Haan bhala kar, tera bhala hoga
Aur darwesh ki sada kya hai

Jaan tum par nisar karta hun
Mai nahe janta dua kya hai

Mai ne mana ke kuch nahe Ghalib
Muft hath aye tou bura kya hai

~ Ghalib.

Sahara

Excerpt from ‘Alakh Nagri’

Allah baybasi kay alam mai humare liye aik azeem sahara hai. Thake haray hue bojhal sar ke liye takiya jis pe sar rakh kar hum sukoon pa sakte hain.

~ Mumtaz Mufti.

Shukar

Shukar ke sahih tareef kya hai? Apne asaishon mai apne pas hasil hone wale naymaton mai un logon ko shareek karna jin ke pas ye asaishen aur naymaten nahe hain. Shukar ka matlab ye bhi hai ke logon ko ap apne amaal se, apne maal se, apne khiyal se asani at’aa karen. Shukar karne wala aik phal-daar shakh hai jo jhuk jati hai. Aur gilla aik bay-samar shakh hai jo atak jati hai.

Kainat ke pedaish - Qiyam aur Harkat

Excerpt from 'Talash'

Kainat ke pedaish ke silsile main Allah ta’ala Quran mai farmate hain, “Pehle qiyam he qiyam tha. Phir hum nee se phoonk mari ke sab kuch mutaharak hogaya. Asmaan alag hogaye. Zameenain alag hogayen. Siyaray bhanbheron ki tarha ghoomnay lagay. Suraj bhar bhar jalne lage. Chand zameenon ke gird chakkar khane lage. Maday ko esa dhachka laga ke aj tak us phoonk ka zor khatam nae hua. Aj bhi kainat bulbulay ki tarha phele jarahe hai Har cheez harkat mai hai. Musalsal harkat.”

~ Mumtaz Mufti.

Rukawat aur harkat ka khel

Excerpts from 'Talash'

Kisi ne bootay se pocha: Bootay bootay! Ye bata tu ugnay mai itne der kyun lagata hai?
Boota bola : Is liye ke zameen ki kashish mujhe ugnay nahe dete.

Rukawat na ho tou harkat mumkin he nahe. Ye qanoon-e-fitrat hai. Rukawaten dar-asal rehmaten hain. Rukawaten harket peda karte hain. Jin ke pohanch jane ka khatra ho unke rastay mai rukawaten ate hain. Agar baray rukawaten khare na karen tou choton mai ehtajaj peda na ho. Revolt na ho. Harkat peda na ho. Aur harkat na ho tou zindagi na ho, kuch bhi na ho. Ye duniya tasveer ki tarha frame mai tangi rahay.

Muhabbat

Ache baat to sab ko ache lagte hai

samajh lena tumhen us se muhabbat hai.

Amaal

Ap apne mehdood zindagi mai saray Quran ko mehfooz nahe kar saktay. Ap Quran mai se woh chezain ikhteyar karo jo ap ke zindagi mai dakhil ho sakte hain maslan walidain ke samne uff na karna, zameen par itra'a kar na chalna aur isi tarha dosray Qurani ehqamat. Ilm jan'nay ka naam nahe balkeh wo chez jo ap ke amal mai dakhil hoge, woh ap ka ilm hai.

~ Wasif Ali Wasif.

Sakhi Kon Hai

Poem by Amir Khusrau

Kafir-e-ishqam musalmani mara darkaar neest
Har rag-e mun taar gashta hajat-e zunnaar neest;
Az sar-e baaleen-e mun bar khez ay naadaan tabeeb
Dard mand-e ishq ra daroo bajuz deedaar neest;
Nakhuda dar kashti-e maagar nabashad go mubaash
Makhuda daareem mara nakhuda darkaar neest;

Translation:
I am a pagan and a worshipper of love: the creed (of Muslims) I do not need;
Every vein of mine has become taunt like a wire,
the (Brahman’s) girdle I do not need.
Leave from my bedside, you ignorant physician!
The only cure for the patient of love is the sight of his beloved –
other than this no medicine does he need.
If there be no pilot in our boat, let there be none:
We have god in our midst: the sea we do not need.
The people of the world say that Khusrau worships idols.
So he does, so he does; the people he does not need,
the world he does not need.

Zehaal-e-miskeen [Notice the Heart]

Zehaal-e-miskeen makun taghaful,
Duraye naina banaye batiyan.
Do not overlook my misery,
by blandishing your eyes and weaving tales,
Ke taab-e-hijran nadaram ay jaan,
Na leho kahe lagaye chatiyan.
My patience has over-brimmed, O sweetheart!
why do you not take me to your bosom.
Shaban-e-hijran daraz chun zulf,
Wa roz-e-waslat cho umer kotah.
Long like curls in the night of separation
short like life on the day of our union.
Sakhi piya ko jo main na dekhun,
To kaise kaTun andheri ratiyan.
My dear, how will I pass the dark dungeon night
without your face before.
Yakayak az dil do chashm-e-jadu,
Basad farebam baburd taskin.
Suddenly, using a thousand tricks
the enchanting eyes robbed me of my tranquil mind.
Kisay pari hai jo ja sunave,
Piyare pi ko hamari batiyan,
Who would care to go and report
this matter to my darling.
Cho shama sozan cho zaraa hairan,
Hamesha giryan be ishq an meh.
Tossed and bewildered, like a flickering candle,
I roam about in the fire of love.
Na nind naina na ang chaina,
Na aap aaven na bhejen patiyan,
Sleepless eyes, restless body,
neither comes she, nor any message.
Bahaq-e-roz-e-visaal-e-dilbar,
Ke daad mara gharib Khusro.
In honour of the day I meet my beloved
who has lured me so long, O Khusro!
Sapet man ke varaye rakhun,
Jo jaye pauN piya ke khatiyan.
I shall keep my heart suppressed
if ever I get a chance to get to her trick.

Khwaab

Mai apne khwaab likh liya karta hun. Is liye nahe ke muje ye guman hai ke khwaab peghamat ke hamil hote hain ya mustaqbil ke khabar dete hain balke is liye ke mai nafs-e-la-shaur mai dil-chaspe rakhta hun.

Rumi sayings (1)

I used to read the myths of Love, now I have become the mythical Lover.

Paradise is surrounded by what we dislike; the fires of hell are surrounded by what we desire.

You know what love is?
It is all kindness, generosity.
Disharmony prevails when
You confuse lust with love, while
The distance between the two
Is endless.

In Silence there is eloquence. Stop weaving and see how the pattern improves.

As you start to walk out on the way, the way appears.

Anything born in spring dies in fall,
but love is not seasonal.

From myself I'm a stone,
but through You I am a gem.

Your heart is the size of an ocean.
Go find yourself in its hidden depths.

And still, after all this time, the Sun has never said to the Earth,
'You owe me.' Look what happens with love like that. It lights up the sky.

I merged so completely with Love and was so fused that I became Love and Love became me.

To praise the sun is to praise your own eyes.

In your light I learn how to love.
In your beauty, how to make poems.
You dance inside my chest,
where no one sees you.

We can’t help being thirsty, moving toward the voice of water.

Silence is the language of God, all else is poor translation.

You are so weak. Give up to grace.
The ocean takes care of each wave
till it gets to shore.

Every tree and plant in the meadow seemed to be dancing, those which average eyes would see as fixed and still.

Who could be so lucky? Who comes to a lake for water and sees the reflection of moon.

All that you think is rain is not. Behind the veil angels sometimes weep. ~ Rumi

The minute I heard my first love story I started looking for you, not knowing how blind that was. Lovers don't finally meet somewhere. They're in each other all along.

This is love: to fly toward a secret sky, to cause a hundred veils to fall each moment. First to let go of life. Finally, to take a step without feet.

When I am with you, we stay up all night.
When you're not here, I can't go to sleep.
Praise God for those two insomnias!
And the difference between them.

Suffering is a gift.
In it is hidden mercy.

Life is sweet.
But merging with you is far sweeter.

Don't be sad! Because God sends the hope in the most desperate moments. Don't forget; the heaviest rain comes out of the darkest clouds.

In every religion there is love,
yet love has no religion.

The heart's a boundless ocean illimitable;
Its waves break unnumbered in every soul.

The agony of lovers
burns with the fire of passion.
Lovers leave traces of where they've been.
The wailing of broken hearts
is the doorway to God.

Thirst drove me down to the water where I drank the moon's reflection.

'My heart is so small, how can you put such great sorrows in it?'
'Look,' he replied, 'your eyes are even smaller yet they behold the world.'

Heart, be brave. If you cannot be brave, just go. Love's glory is not a small thing.

My soul wants to fly away when your presence calls it so sweetly. My soul wants to take flight, when you whisper, 'arise'.

Love is a travel. All travellers whether they want or not are changed. No one can travel into love and remain the same.

Ji Chahe (If you wish)

Ji chahe to sheesha ban ja, ji chahe paimana ban ja Sheesha paimana kya banna, mai ban ja maikhana ban ja..
If you wish, become the glass, or the chalice; But why choose, when you can become the wine and the tavern

By becoming the wine and the tavern, become the tale of intoxication. By becoming the tale of intoxication, become a stranger to life (interpretation: lose yourself in the lust of devotion)

Hasti se bagaana hona, masti ka afsana banna Is hone se is banne se achha hai, deewana ban ja
Becoming a tale, becoming a stranger to being, Better than these, however, is to become a madman (or someone madly in love (with God).

Better than becoming a madman is to be a madman, Better than being a madman is to become dust at the door of a beloved

Khak-e-dar-e-jaanana kya hai, ahle dil ki annkh ka surma Shama ke dil ki thandak ban ja, noor e dil e parwana ban ja
What is dust, but kohl in the eyes of the people of the heart, Become the coolness at the heart of a candle, become the moth illuminating the heart

Seekh Zaheen ke dil se jalna, kahe ko har shamma par jalna Apni aag mein khud jal jaye, tu aisa parwana ban ja
1.Learn, Zaheen (Intelligent One), to burn from the heart Why burn for every flame. Become that moth that burns in its own fire
2."Why burn for every flame; become the light that is in the heart of the moth" which means: the moth is motivated by its own inner light (or its own picture of what light is) to go seek the flame. You, the sufi seeker, should become (or become aware of) that inner light.

Hazrat Zaheen Shahtaji
